Arccotangent Function

Definition

Definition of the Arccotangent Function

The arccotangent function y=arccot⁡xy = \operatorname{arccot} x is the inverse function of the cotangent function y=cot⁡xy = \cot x.

Properties

  • Domain: R\mathbb{R}
  • Range: (0,π)(0, \pi)
  • Monotonicity: Monotonically decreasing

Why This Range?

  • On this interval cot⁡x\cot x decreases monotonically from +∞+\infty to −∞-\infty, so each yy corresponds to exactly one xx;
  • therefore the range of arccot⁡x\operatorname{arccot} x is (0,π)(0, \pi);
  • another interval would also give an “inverse”, but with different values; fixing the principal interval keeps every textbook and calculator in agreement.

Worked Example

Example: Find arccot⁡3\operatorname{arccot} \sqrt{3}.

arccotangent functionevaluationspecial angle

Approach: We need an angle θ∈(0,π)\theta \in (0, \pi) with cot⁡θ=3\cot \theta = \sqrt{3}.

Steps:

  1. Among the special angles, cot⁡π6=3\cot \frac{\pi}{6} = \sqrt{3};
  2. π6≈0.524\frac{\pi}{6} \approx 0.524, which lies in (0,π)(0, \pi);
  3. By uniqueness on the principal interval, arccot⁡3=π6\operatorname{arccot} \sqrt{3} = \frac{\pi}{6}.

Answer: arccot⁡3=π6\operatorname{arccot} \sqrt{3} = \frac{\pi}{6}.

Exercises

Exercise1

Given y=arccot⁡xy = \operatorname{arccot} x, find its domain and range.

arccotangent functiondomainrange

Approach:

The arccotangent is the inverse of the cotangent function restricted to its principal interval (0,π)(0, \pi): the domain comes from the range of cot⁡x\cot x, and the range is the principal interval itself.

Steps:

  1. The cotangent function y=cot⁡xy = \cot x takes every real value on (0,π)(0, \pi), so its range is R\mathbb{R} and the domain of y=arccot⁡xy = \operatorname{arccot} x is R\mathbb{R}.
  2. On that interval the cotangent function decreases from +∞+\infty to −∞-\infty, so choosing (0,π)(0, \pi) as the principal interval makes the inverse exist and stay single-valued.
  3. The inverse maps the angles of the principal interval back onto R\mathbb{R}, so the range of y=arccot⁡xy = \operatorname{arccot} x is (0,π)(0, \pi).

Answer:

Domain: R\mathbb{R}; Range: (0,π)(0, \pi).
