Arccosine Function

Definition

Definition of the Arccosine Function

The arccosine function y=arccos⁡xy = \arccos x is the inverse function of the cosine function y=cos⁡xy = \cos x.

Properties

  • Domain: [−1,1][-1, 1]
  • Range: [0,π][0, \pi]
  • Monotonicity: Monotonically decreasing

Why This Range?

  • On this interval cos⁡x\cos x decreases monotonically from 11 to −1-1, so each yy corresponds to exactly one xx;
  • therefore the range of arccos⁡x\arccos x is [0,π][0, \pi];
  • another interval would also give an “inverse”, but with different values; fixing the principal interval keeps every textbook and calculator in agreement.

Worked Example

Example: Find arccos⁡(−12)\arccos(-\frac{1}{2}).

arccosine functionevaluationspecial angle

Approach: We need an angle θ∈[0,π]\theta \in [0, \pi] with cos⁡θ=−12\cos \theta = -\frac{1}{2}.

Steps:

  1. Among the special angles, cos⁡2π3=−12\cos \frac{2\pi}{3} = -\frac{1}{2};
  2. 2π3≈2.094\frac{2\pi}{3} \approx 2.094, which lies in [0,π][0, \pi];
  3. By uniqueness on the principal interval, arccos⁡(−12)=2π3\arccos(-\frac{1}{2}) = \frac{2\pi}{3}.

Answer: arccos⁡(−12)=2π3\arccos(-\frac{1}{2}) = \frac{2\pi}{3}.

Given y=arccos⁡xy = \arccos x, find its domain and range.

arccosine functiondomainrange

Approach:

The arccosine is the inverse of the cosine function restricted to its principal interval [0,π][0, \pi]: the domain comes from the range of cos⁡x\cos x, and the range is the principal interval itself.

Steps:

  1. The range of the cosine function y=cos⁡xy = \cos x on R\mathbb{R} is [−1,1][-1, 1], and the domain of an inverse function is exactly the range of the original function, so the domain of y=arccos⁡xy = \arccos x is [−1,1][-1, 1].
  2. The cosine function is monotonically decreasing on [0,π][0, \pi], running from 11 down to −1-1, so this interval is chosen as the principal interval to make the inverse single-valued.
  3. The inverse maps the angles of the principal interval back onto the domain of the original function, so the range of y=arccos⁡xy = \arccos x is [0,π][0, \pi].

Answer:

Domain: [−1,1][-1, 1]; Range: [0,π][0, \pi].
