Properties of Continuous Functions on Closed Intervals

Continuous functions on closed intervals enjoy a series of important properties; these properties form the foundation of calculus theory and are widely applied in practical problems.

Continuity on a Closed Interval

Continuity on a Closed Interval

Let the function f(x)f(x) be defined on the closed interval [a,b][a, b]. If:

  1. f(x)f(x) is continuous on the open interval (a,b)(a, b)
  2. f(x)f(x) is right-continuous at aa: lim⁡x→a+f(x)=f(a)\lim_{x \to a^+} f(x) = f(a)
  3. f(x)f(x) is left-continuous at bb: lim⁡x→b−f(x)=f(b)\lim_{x \to b^-} f(x) = f(b)

then f(x)f(x) is called continuous on the closed interval [a,b][a, b].
