TestFlight Testing

Before submitting for review, running a round of real-device testing with TestFlight is the most effective way to reduce rejection risk and improve version quality. This chapter explains the difference between Internal and External testing, test group management, build distribution and feedback collection, plus the Beta App Review requirements for external testing. The point of the whole chapter is that TestFlight is not a formality you rush through on release day but a quality gate that runs continuously while you build.

The internal-versus-external distinction is the one to internalize first, because it decides who can install your build, how fast, and whether Apple looks at it before it lands. Internal testing is limited to one hundred members of your own team and needs no review at all, which makes it the fastest loop available. External testing can reach ten thousand testers and does go through Beta App Review, which is a lighter review than full submission but still means your build and its description are read by a human. That leads into the practical question of how to organize your groups, so that the team, your beta users, and your broader audience each get the build they are actually meant to test rather than everybody receiving everything, and so you can track eligibility and public links without losing track of who was invited to what.

After working through the chapter you should be able to distinguish internal from external testing by scenario, by headcount limits, and by review requirement; upload a build to TestFlight and create both internal and external test groups; invite testers by email or by public link and manage their eligibility over time; read tester feedback and crash reports well enough to turn them into a concrete pre-submission issue list rather than a pile of vague complaints; and plan the standard internal-then-external-then-submission release flow that mature teams follow. If you want fast internal validation, focus on internal testing, which you can run in minutes. If you need real-user validation outside your team, focus on external testing and note the Beta App Review requirement before you promise anyone a date. And before every release, go through the feedback and crash material, because that is where the majority of rejections are actually prevented.
