Planes in Space

The General Equation of a Plane

The general equation of a plane

Ax+By+Cz+D=0Ax + By + Cz + D = 0

where (A,B,C)(A, B, C) is the normal vector of the plane.

The Geometric Meaning of the Normal Vector

The normal vector n⃗=(A,B,C)\vec{n} = (A, B, C) is perpendicular to every vector in the plane, and so it is perpendicular to the plane itself.

Relations between the Coefficients

  • AA, BB and CC cannot all be zero
  • DD is determined by the position of the plane
  • multiplying both sides of the equation by a nonzero constant does not change the plane

The Point-Normal Form of a Plane

The point-normal form of a plane

The equation of the plane passing through the point P0(x0,y0,z0)P_0(x_0, y_0, z_0) with normal vector n⃗=(A,B,C)\vec{n} = (A, B, C) is:

A(x−x0)+B(y−y0)+C(z−z0)=0A(x - x_0) + B(y - y_0) + C(z - z_0) = 0

The Features of the Point-Normal Form

  • it gives the normal vector and a point on the plane directly
  • it makes it easy to build an equation from geometric conditions
  • the form is intuitive and easy to understand

The Intercept Form of a Plane

The intercept form of a plane

xa+yb+zc=1\frac{x}{a} + \frac{y}{b} + \frac{z}{c} = 1

where a,b,ca, b, c are the intercepts of the plane on the x,y,zx, y, z axes respectively.

The Geometric Meaning of the Intercepts

  • aa: the xx-coordinate of the point where the plane meets the xx-axis
  • bb: the yy-coordinate of the point where the plane meets the yy-axis
  • cc: the zz-coordinate of the point where the plane meets the zz-axis

The Three-Point Form of a Plane

The three-point form of a plane

The equation of the plane passing through the three points P1(x1,y1,z1)P_1(x_1, y_1, z_1), P2(x2,y2,z2)P_2(x_2, y_2, z_2) and P3(x3,y3,z3)P_3(x_3, y_3, z_3) is:

∣x−x1y−y1z−z1x2−x1y2−y1z2−z1x3−x1y3−y1z3−z1∣=0\begin{vmatrix} x - x_1 & y - y_1 & z - z_1 \\ x_2 - x_1 & y_2 - y_1 & z_2 - z_1 \\ x_3 - x_1 & y_3 - y_1 & z_3 - z_1 \end{vmatrix} = 0

How the Three-Point Form Is Derived

It uses the property that the scalar triple product is zero: the necessary and sufficient condition for three vectors to be coplanar is that their scalar triple product vanishes.

Converting between the Forms

The General Form → the Point-Normal Form

Convert Ax+By+Cz+D=0Ax + By + Cz + D = 0 into:

A(x−x0)+B(y−y0)+C(z−z0)=0A(x - x_0) + B(y - y_0) + C(z - z_0) = 0

where P0(x0,y0,z0)P_0(x_0, y_0, z_0) is a point on the plane.

The Point-Normal Form → the General Form

Simply expand the point-normal form to get the general form.

The Intercept Form → the General Form

xa+yb+zc=1⇒xa+yb+zc−1=0\frac{x}{a} + \frac{y}{b} + \frac{z}{c} = 1 \Rightarrow \frac{x}{a} + \frac{y}{b} + \frac{z}{c} - 1 = 0

Exercises

Exercise 1

Find the equation of the plane passing through the point A(1,2,3)A(1, 2, 3) with normal vector (2,−1,1)(2, -1, 1).

the equation of a planethe point-normal formthe general form

Approach:

Use the point-normal form and then convert it to the general form.

Steps:

  1. The point-normal form: 2(x−1)−(y−2)+(z−3)=02(x - 1) - (y - 2) + (z - 3) = 0

  2. Expanding: 2x−2−y+2+z−3=02x - 2 - y + 2 + z - 3 = 0

  3. Simplifying: 2x−y+z−3=02x - y + z - 3 = 0

Answer: the equation of the plane is 2x−y+z−3=02x - y + z - 3 = 0

Exercise 2

Find the equation of the plane passing through the three points A(1,0,0)A(1, 0, 0), B(0,1,0)B(0, 1, 0) and C(0,0,1)C(0, 0, 1).

the equation of a planethe three-point formthe normal vector

Approach:

Use the three-point form, or first find the normal vector and then use the point-normal form.

Steps:

  1. The normal vector: AB⃗=(−1,1,0)\vec{AB} = (-1, 1, 0) and AC⃗=(−1,0,1)\vec{AC} = (-1, 0, 1) AB⃗×AC⃗=(−1,1,0)×(−1,0,1)=(1,1,1)\vec{AB} \times \vec{AC} = (-1, 1, 0) \times (-1, 0, 1) = (1, 1, 1)

  2. The point-normal form: (x−1)+y+z=0(x - 1) + y + z = 0

  3. Simplifying: x+y+z=1x + y + z = 1

Answer: the equation of the plane is x+y+z=1x + y + z = 1
