Advanced Techniques

The first six chapters covered the entire basic syntax of Markdown — master those and writing is already covered. The remaining advanced syntax belongs to a toolbox you reach for only when you need it.

This chapter introduces escaping characters (for when you want to show an asterisk itself instead of letting it take effect), footnotes (adding a source without interrupting the flow of the text), embedding HTML (the boundaries and the risks of using native tags inside Markdown), and math formulas (which need renderer support and are not available on every platform).

Every section explains what support it depends on and how it degrades when that support is missing, so you are never caught out when you publish to a different platform.
