Other Common Taxes

A Quick Primer

  • Stamp duty: levied on economic contracts, documents transferring ownership, and the like; it is common in equity transfers and property purchase contracts.
  • Deed tax: paid when a property transfer is registered; the rate depends on the nature of the property, whether it is a first or second home, and other factors.
  • Property tax / urban land use tax: paid as required or piloted in some regions, and it applies to the holding stage.
  • Resource tax and environmental protection tax: relevant to resource extraction and pollution-emitting businesses.
  • Vehicle and vessel tax: the annual tax on vehicles and vessels, usually collected on behalf of the tax authority by insurers.

What to Watch Out For

  • Before a transaction, find out the tax rate and the payment deadline for the corresponding tax, so that your cash flow plan does not go wrong.
  • For transfers of equity or property, consider the combined impact of stamp duty, deed tax, and individual or corporate income tax.
  • Certain industries (energy, chemicals, manufacturing) have to pay extra attention to resource tax and environmental protection tax compliance.
