Saving Strategies

Many people think that saving simply means “putting aside whatever is left after spending”. But the correct formula is: Income - Savings = Spending. Saving should be a deliberate, priority action.

Why Should You Save?

1. Handling Emergencies (Emergency Fund)

Life is always full of surprises: job loss, illness, a broken car, a broken computer.

Emergency Fund

A sum of money set aside specifically for unexpected events. The amount usually recommended is 3 to 6 months of living expenses. This money should be kept somewhere with high liquidity and low risk (such as a demand deposit account or a money market fund).

2. Reaching Short-Term Goals (Sinking Funds)

Saving money for a specific goal, such as next year’s holiday, a new phone, or an insurance premium.

The sinking fund method: set up a separate “account” or bookkeeping category for each goal, put a little into it every month, and let the small amounts accumulate.

3. The Principal for Investing

Without savings, you cannot invest. Saving is the fuel for growing wealth.

The Power of Compound Interest

Einstein once said: “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world.”

Compound Interest

Compound interest means that interest is earned not only on the principal but also on the interest itself. Formula: FV=PV×(1+r)nFV = PV \times (1 + r)^n

  • FVFV: future value
  • PVPV: present value (principal)
  • rr: interest rate
  • nn: number of periods

The earlier you start saving, the more powerful the effect of compound interest becomes.

How Do You Save Efficiently?

1. Pay Yourself First

The first thing to do when your salary lands is to transfer the amount you have planned to save. Do not wait until the end of the month to see what is left, because there usually is not anything left.

2. Automate It

Use your bank’s automatic transfer function.

  • Set up an automatic transfer of 20% to your savings account on the day after payday.
  • Out of sight, out of mind: you will gradually get used to living on the remaining 80%.

3. Save Your Windfalls

When you receive a bonus, a tax refund, or a red envelope, do not spend it right away — save at least half of it.

4. The 365 / 52-Week Saving Methods

  • The 365-day method: save 1 yuan on day one, 2 yuan on day two, and so on up to 365 yuan on day 365. Over a year you can save 66,795 yuan.
  • The 52-week method: save 10 yuan in week one, 20 yuan in week two, and so on up to 520 yuan in week 52. Over a year you can save 13,780 yuan.

These game-like methods make saving more enjoyable.

Inflation does indeed devalue cash. Therefore, saving is only the first step.

  • Short-term saving (the emergency fund): for safety, accept a low return.
  • Long-term saving (retirement): it has to be turned into investments in order to beat inflation.

Saving without investing really is a “loss” over the long run; but without saving, you do not even qualify to invest.

Summary

Saving is a habit, and a form of self-discipline. It represents your command over the future. Do not dismiss a single yuan — they are all soldiers in your future army.
